Gdansk – Evening Walk through the main city (Główne Miasto W Gdańsku)

The real spring came, the temperature outside the window is higher, and the sun is all brighter. It’s time to start planning a new large car trip. We have not yet decided where we will go this year: plans, as usual, a lot, and there is little money, and it’s hard to arrange priorities. I would like to make a trip as interesting as possible and rich, visit new countries and look into Poland’s favorite US and Germany. But while the summer journey is only planned, we will gladly inspect the sights of Moscow and neighboring regions. Those who are signed on us in Instagram, can monitor our trips almost in real time. Very soon, reports on these travels will appear on the pages of our site, and while we would like to finish the stories about our last year’s summer Eurotripe. There are two more posts about Poland (including this) and several stories about Lithuania. If you remember, we stopped at the stories about Trilli and its sights. We already wrote about the southern mole in Gdynia and Zoo In Oliva. And now go to the heart of Gdansk – to the main city, in the oldest part of Danzig, because it was exactly that this city was called from 1793 to 1945.

By the way, we have an excellent Selection of hotels in Gdansk, You have already booked?

The old houses have been preserved here, and it is in the main city that there is an integral attraction of all cities in Poland – the market square and town hall. In 2005, the Government of Poland proposed to make the ancient city of Gdansk (areas of the Old Town and the main city) in the UNESCO World Heritage List. Until the decision is made, and Gdansk is on the list of candidates. But from the fact that officials make a long decision, the city does not get less beautiful, so let’s walk through his evening streets.

As well as in other cities of Poland, the historic center of the city is a pedestrian zone, so the car will have to be left on one of the city parking. We left our next to one of the sights of Gdansk – in a large water mill (Wielki Młyn W Gdańsku). The mill was built in 1350 by the Knights of the Teutonic Order on the shores of the Radun Canal.

Surprisingly, until 1945, it was used according to its direct appointment and grinding up to 200 tons of flour per day. Naturally, for 600 years of its existence, it was upgraded and partially rebuilt, but still – imagine the plant that worked 600 years! &# 128578; During World War II, the mill was partially destroyed, but it was quickly restored in the postwar years. And now in the building of a large water mill is a shopping center with many stores.

In the daylight, a large water mill does not impress – a common old brick building, and if you do not know about his history, you can not pay attention. But at night, thanks to a special backlight, she looks very beautiful. If you have the opportunity to take a walk on the night Gdansk, then you will definitely build your route so to stroll and past the mill. It is worth it!

Past of residential buildings and shops We go to inspect the main city.

Ahead is visible Tower of Yateck (Baszta Jacek) – the highest tower of urban medieval fortifications Gdansk. It was built in about 1400. An octagonal brick building for a long time performed the functions of the main observation point of the city. The tower was built in such a way that it was possible to lead the shelling of enemies even when they came close to the walls.

Next to the Tower of Yatsek is another architectural monument – the indoor market of Dominican merchants (Hala Targowa Kupców Dominikańskich W Gdańsku), built in 1896 near the Church of St. Nicholas. Like 100 years ago, now there are trading orders, where you can buy high-quality and inexpensive goods.

At the Dominican Square, where the Tower of Yatsek and trading rows is located, there are a large number of small cafes and eateries, where you can eat very tasty and inexpensively. We do not love dear and pathory restaurants for tourists, and very rarely visit them, so we decided to dine in a small cafe for three tables for local. And did not lose – for 10 euros we got a hearty and delicious dinner for two.

While we ate, it’s completely dark on the street and our walk from the evening turned into a night. &# 128578;

Our nightly walk along Gdansk began on a beer street (Ulica Piwna) at the building of the city arsenal (Wielka Zbrojownia W Gdańsku), built in 1602-1605. For a long time, the building was used by his direct appointment as a weapon warehouse, and now there is a shop on the first floor, and the upper floors occupies the Academy of Fine Arts.

One of the most famous sights – Korona Gdansk – Mariacka (Bazylika Mariacka). The full name of this amazing in the beauty of the church – the Basilica of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary (Bazylika Konkatedralna Wniebowzięcia Najświętszej Marii Panny W Gdańsku). Church dimensions are amazed: 105 meters long, width – 66 meters, and height – 77.6 meters.

Inside the church, up to 25,000 people can be at the same time! It is believed that the Church of St. Mary is among the largest brick churches in the world. The sizes of the church are so great that even with an ultra-wide-organized lens is difficult to fit the church in the frame.

Construction of the Church of St. Mary began in 1379 and lasted more than 150 years. In 1945, the church was seriously damaged, part of the arches collapsed. But in the post-war years, the church was quickly restored, so now the Mariatsky Church appears before residents of the city and tourists in all its glory.

On the bell tower there is an observation deck and to rise to it, you will have to overcome 400 steps. Lifting to the tower costs 5 zlotys (€ 1.2) for adults and 2.5 zlotys (€ 0.6) for preferential categories of citizens and students.

The main relics of the Basilica of St. Mary are the famous Triptych Hans Memling "Scary court". Currently, there is an exact copy of this artwork, and the original – Gdansk National Museum. In addition to the "Scary Court" in the church you can see the Gothic Statue of the Madonna of the 15th Century, Astronomical Watch, a very beautiful organ, altari and other religious relics, which are not one hundred years.

Gdansk Market Square is called "Long Market" (Długi Targ). It appeared at the beginning of the XIII century and had an oval form (unlike Wroclaw and Krakow, where the square had a form close to the square). Dluga Targ along with Dluga Street (Ulica Dluga) constitutes the famous royal route – one of the most popular excursion routes Gdansk.

Along the entire market on both sides, houses are located (rocky), and each of them has their own history. For example, in the photo below the Red Building in the center is called the Dom Schlütera (Dom Schlütera). It was built in 1638-1640 for the family of gaters. This is one of the most valuable architectural monuments that survived the World War War almost without damage.

It was in these houses that the richest and wealthy people lived in the city. Now most of them are located hotels, hostels, restaurants and nightclubs.

At the end of the market, a green gate, built in 1564-1568, are visible. The first gates at this place appeared in 1357 and most likely, it was one of the most first city gates Gdansk. Now in the building of the gate is the branch of the National Museum of Gdansk, and for a long time in one of the rooms there was a residence of the Polish President Lech Valens.

In front of the city of Artus, there is a symbol of Gdansk – Neptune Fountain. The figure of God symbolizes the connection of the city with the sea. The fountain appeared in 1633, and after a hundred years, in 1757, Johann Karl Stenter changed the base and a bowl of fountain. Now the fountain is a place where the lovers appoint each other dates.

Of course, the most notable building of the long market is the City Town Hall of the Main City. After the Basilica of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, this is the second building in the center of Gdansk, its height is 83.5 meters. The town hall was built between 1379 and 1492, and the dome with the statue of King Sigmund Augustus appeared in 1593.

Unusual not only the appearance of the town hall, made in a strict Gothic style, but also the rich interiors of the building. It is believed that the Red Hall has the most exquisite tariff interior of modernity.

On the entrance to the town hall there is a bas-relief with the image of two lions that keep the shield. One of Lviv turned his head toward the Golden Gate, the legend did it happen when the king was expected. Lion so respect him that he could not stay with his back.

Passing through the Golden Gate, we were at the coal market (Targ of Wenglovy). Here is the torture and prison tower. How it is not difficult to guess, there was a city prison, as well as the court. The first building in this place was built back in the XIV century. Modern building Katovalni (or shy), which we see now, designed in the XVI year by architect Antonis Obbergen. In 1604, a shameful post was moved here, which before that stood before the building of the City Hall. Now in the building of the former prison is a historical museum.

The building of the National Bank of Poland also resembles a prison building.

Remember, we started our walk from the city arsenal building? This is it, but from the side of the coal market (Targ Węgloweg).

Near the Arsenal is the theater of the chin (the theater of the coast), built more recently, in 1967. Before the war, the Danzig City Theater was located in this place, and even earlier – the theater in the open sky.

Night dropped on Gdansk, and it’s time for us to go back to the hotel. The return path to the car parked at the old mill, lay past the church of Holy Catharina – one of the oldest churches of the city.

The church was built in 1227-1239 for the means of Pomeranian princes. In 1945, he was almost completely destroyed, as well as his chic interiors.

Gdansk – very interesting and beautiful city. If you decide to spend your vacation on the Polish resorts of Trilli, then you will receive not only a beautiful beach holiday, but also be able to visit the most interesting museums of Gdansk, enjoy the architecture of the city, as well as feel the guilty and goodwill of local residents.
