Cities of Greece: Zakynthos (Zakynthos)

The capital of the island, as well as him, is called Zakynthos, then Zakynthos.

For many centuries wearing status "Venice of the East" (Islanders themselves prefer a romantic name "FiR-di Levante" – " Levant flower"), he was almost completely restored after the 1953 earthquake.

sights

Urban quarters stretch along a wide harbor by almost 3 km, but the core of the city lies between the big Square Platia Solomou in northern I Church of Ios-Dionisios (Open daily from 8.00 to 13.00 and from 17.00 to 22.00) in the south. Next to the Church of the Heavenly Patron of the Island with its beautiful modern frescoes there is a new Museum of Zakynthus (Open daily, in the summer – from 8.00 to 22.00, in winter – from 9.00 to 13.00 and from 17.00 to 21.00; 2 euros) and carefully restored Church of Ayos-Nikolaos-Tu-mole On Platia Solomou Square. The latter received a name in honor of the most famous native of the island – the poet of Dionisios Solomosos, the generic team of modernism in the Greek literature and the author of the text of the state anthem, a quote from which decorates the Statue of Freedom in Square. Here are impressive Solomos Museum (daily from 9.00 to 14.00; 3 euros), city Library and massive Byzantine Museum (Works on Thursday to Sunday with 8.00 to 15.00; 3 euros), also sometimes called the old museum of Zakynth.

Another attraction is massive lock, lying on a rock. The dilapidated Fort of the Venetian period (open daily from 8.00 to 19.30 in the summer and from 8.00 to 14.00 in winter; 1.5 euros) retained the remnants of dungeons, arsenals and several defensive belts, and the panoramas opening from here are simply amazing. Additional charm of the fortress gives a thick carpet of fallen pine needles, covered all its territory – it is easy to understand what the smell costs here hot Greek summer. Below the castle, in the village of Bacheli (Bohali), there is a good, albeit the tavern with panoramic views. And even below are pretty ugly New Amphitheater (main concert area of the city) and a good maritime museum (open daily from 9.00 to 14.00 and from 18.00 to 21.00; 2.5 euros) with an interesting chronological collection on the history of Greek navigation.

Entertainment

Most restaurants and bars focused along the embankment and Ayiiou Markou Square, although less crowded places are still better looking far from the pier.

Beach rest

In the city, there are no particularly good beaches, but it’s easy to get along the coastal road to the beaches of the southeast of the Vasilicos Peninsula with its modern resort Argation (Argasion), Big Bay Laganas With the same resort complex (it is considered the best in the area – its beach stretches at 9 km), to small seaside villages Caminha (Kaminia), Ano-Vasilikos (ANO Vassilikos) and Porto Zoro (Porto Zoro) or secluded fishing village Casidyari. Beaches around this shore of the nonsense and most covered with small pebbles, but in Argation and Laganas there is no shortage of disco, bars and clubs.
