Inverted reality: prototypes of the heroes of the Games of the Thrones

In the late 80s, the studio studio Paramount Pictures studio George Martin decided to leave work and completely devote himself to science fiction and fantasy. Charter "Follow Self-Rules", as he explained later in one of the interviews, Martin wanted to tell "about the grand battles, majestic castles, a wall with a height of 200 m and flying over all these dragons".

So began working on a series of fantasy-novel "Song of Ice and Flame", based on which already fifth year is created by the "Game of Thrones", the most large-scale and expensive series of modern television. Martin, from childhood interested in history, connected in his works of real characters with fictional, mixed them in time and sent to fight it in ancient Greece, then in medieval England. He turned out an alternative history of the world, a beautiful allegory for the war of the past and present and at the same time an important rhetorical question: why did humanity continue to the game of the throne in different periods of time?

War Aloi and White Rose

The main inspiration for the "Song of Ice and Flame" was the bloody historical period in the history of England – War of Aloi and White Rose, when representatives of the two dynasties have fought for power for three decades. However, the foundation of this struggle was laid even earlier – in 1377, by the death of King Eduard III. Then the power went to his younger 10-year-old son Richard (Richard II) bypassing more older descendants. Jump across the whole generation and became the base of the long struggle between the Lancaster dynasties (Alay Rosa) and Yorks (White Rose).

Confusing relationships, intrigues, betrayal and exposure, thousands of useless deaths – it is the complex character of that period by Martin. During the war, the roses did not have an explicit leader (he was not Martin), but there were many bright personalities, all the ways trying to achieve the throne. In fact, it can be called a tribute to the honor of that important period, only in an inverted alternative version: Mammoths and dragons are involved in battles, and dragons and dragons are involved in the battles, and the rethinkable map of England includes climatic zones and large-scale landscapes from the Wild North to ancient Egypt.

Nade Stark – William Hastings

One of the characters Novel Martin and the series "Games of Thrones", King Robert Baratheon, is almost completely written off from a real historical character – King Edward IV. Edward was known as a valiant warrior in battle, he managed, as well as Robert Barateon in the book, pick up power from the crazy king Henry Vi. He was also known for his personal and very earthly problems – overweight alcohol, overeating and adultery. And just like Robert Barateon was Nade Stark, Edward IV was a true friend William Hastings. Hastings was an influential baron that supported his king and a close friend throughout the board, and after his death in 1483 helped Richard III get power. However, as well as in the case of Nadea Starka, the new ruler quickly changed his attitude, declared Hastings a traitor and ordered to cut off his head.

Tyrion Lannister – Richard III

Hero Tyrion Lannister, according to George Martin, was partially written off from the image of the English king Richard III from the York dynasty. Medieval historians contacted Richard III and described it as physically repulsive, humpback and evil man. Between his appearance and personality was held parallel: the deformity was reflected by his immorality. In fact, Richard III did not have physical characteristics, but was desecrated by historians of the Tudor dynasty deliberately, since he opposed Heinrich Tudor. The death of Richard III during the battle of Bosworth became a historical event: Heinrich Tudor ascended for the throne, the last descendant of Lancaster. Heinrich married in the end of Elizabeth York and connected to Aluu and White Rose, having finished a long-term confrontation.

Sersa Lannister – Margarita Anzhuy and Jane Shore

The prototype of the strong and domineering Serne Lannister became the English Queen in the 1450 Margarita Anzhuy, one of the brightest female political figures during the time of the roses. Margarita Anjuica was the wife of King Henry VI and because of his unstable mental state often carried out his duties. So, it was she convinced to remove from the Big Council of Richard Yorksky, before that which served as the regent of the king. It is believed that it is from this conflict and the further military confrontation between Richard York and Margarita Anzhuy and began a war of roses.

In the fifth Novella Martin and in the fifth season "Games of Thrones", Sersi is sentenced to public humiliation: a passage through the city is nude and sked. Martin took this idea also from real events. At the end of the 15th century, Jane Shore, the former lover of King Edward IV and one of the main political intrigues of the courtyard during Richard III, was convicted and had to go through the lower dress on the streets of London. In those times, when women dressed very conservatively, to walk publicly in the underwear was humiliating and comparable for sensations with the public appearance in nude today.

Joffrey Barateon – Richard II and Eustachius IV

If Sersa Lannister was written off from the image of Margarita Anzhuy, then the prototype of her son Joffrey Barateon became Richard II, the young king, who lived almost 100 years before Margarita Anzhu. He was a merciless and insatiable ruler, inxicated power, which was in many ways he passed and intensified in the hero Joffrey. Richard II became the king at the age of ten years, after the death of his grandfather, King Eduard III. Richard’s father – Eduard Black Prince – by that time he has already died, like his brother Lionel Antwerp. But alive remained three more sons of Eduard III. Who should have inherited the king: Senior Son or Senior Grandson? The occurrence of a height of the generation of the sons of Edward became one of the main prerequisites of the roses war, which began a few decades later.

However, the motive of the death of Joffrey was written off from Richard II, but from the English Count Evstachia IV, the son of the English king Stephen, who lived at the beginning of the XII century. Eustachia had a rather strange death: he died, suppressing the cake on Pira. King Stefan led a long struggle for power with his cousin, Empress Matilda, and the war could continue to continue – between Eustachius, the son of Stephen, and Henry II, Son Matilda. But in August 1153, Evstachius suddenly choked and died than quickly allowed a dispute about who to be king. The death of Eustachia was convicted random, because she, random or not, completed a long civil war.

Red Wedding – Massacre in Glenko and Black Lunch

One of the most memorable scenes in themelles and the cult series of the first season "Red Wedding" was compiled from two episodes of the history of medieval Scotland. On the one hand, this is a black lunch that happened in Edinburgh in 1440. Then there was a continuous struggle of the royal dynasty with the Douglas clan. Count William Douglas and Brother were invited to Edinburgh on a conciliatory feast with a 10-year-old king Yakov II Scottish. At the end of the Pir, the battle of a lonely drum was heard: the servants entered the hall, dragged Douglas to the courtyard and beheaded them.

The second episode, served as a prototype for a red wedding, was the event with two centuries later. The massacre in Glenko occurred in February 1692, when all representatives of the McDonald clan were magnificently killed for power disloyalty. That night, two companies of soldiers under the leadership of Robert Campbell arrived in Glenko in North Scottish Highlands and asked to spend the night and stay in the way. MacDonalda took guests – located and fed them. Early in the morning, Campbell soldiers unexpectedly got up and staged a massacre, killing 38 representatives of the McDonald clan, and leaving the rest to die in the cold.

Ice Wall – Shaft Adriana

The prototype of the ice wall with a height of 200 m and the length of almost 500 km, separating seven kingdoms from wild lands, was the UNESCO World Heritage Site – Val Adriana. The shaft was built by the Romans in the II century. NS. To prevent raids tribes from the north. The shaft of stone and peat was originally stretched from the Irish Bay to the North. Today, he has been preserved only in part: the National Hiking Route of the Vala Adrian runs 135 km and passes by many of the balances of the former fortification. For those who do not want to go on foot, there is a bus route that will pronounce passengers to the places of preserved segments.

Night Watch – Templars

The main security of a massive ice wall is the night watch – a group of men who refused their past and bringing a wrestling for life for life. In this military organization there are echoes of various knightly associations and Christian organizations, for example of hospiters and the Templars. The Order of Hospitallers has become the longest and exists so far, and the Order of the Templar was the most powerful. Just like the night watch, the Templars gave an oath to protect a certain territory: only in their case it was not an ice wall, but Jerusalem and Christian lands in the Middle East.

Dotrachets – Mongols, Gunns and North America tribes

George Martin created the Dotrachetsev, their culture and life lifestyle with a loaf at once in several historical periods and nomadic peoples. On the one hand, there is something from the Mongolian tribes and Genghis Khan in the Dotracians, on the other – a lot of similar to Huns, who lived several centuries earlier, with the third – also with the indigenous peoples of North America. They, as well as at Dotrachetsev, traced the culture of expression and masculinity through external details: hairstyles, beards and tattoos.

Daeneeris Targaryen – Heinrich Tudor

In the image of DeEneris Targaryen, you can see several historical characters at once. She could be Alexander Macedonian who won half the world and joined hundreds of nations to his empire. Deeeneris also resembles Cleopatra, a strong woman-governor, surrounded by pyramids and landscapes of North Africa. But if you continue to look at the whole story across the prism of roses, Daeneeris will see a clear parallel with King Heinrich Tudor, thanks to which the many years of descendants for the throne ended. Heinrich grew up in exile in France, because he wanted to hide from persecution and explicit death. But then he returned to England to fulfill his destination and become the king. Herrich’s victorious battles led under the flag of Wales on which the red dragon bangs.
