Lakestry does not know rest

The Republic of Burundi is located in the Great African Lakes area, which political analysts consider "Powder cellar" Continent. Convulsions, shaking the region, are so powerful that because of them, even the lakes themselves periodically change the names. It is clearly visible on geographic maps released with an interval in one or two decades.

The reservoirs, crossed in their time by the colonizers in honor of the European Agricultural Persons – Albert and Eduard, in the mid-1970s found the names of local dictatorships – Zairsky Mobutu session of Sek and Ugandani Say Amina, respectively. Amina soon overthrow, declared a cannibal, and "his" Lake appropriated ancient, invalid African name Ruitanzig. This year and Mobutu flew from the presidential chair. Another renaming of Lake Albert – Mobutu is clearly not far off. Toponymic reforms in these places never occur painlessly. They must be followed by any war: interstate or civil.

Burundi stands on the shore of the lake, which, with all modes (and in German colonialists, and in the Belgian colonialists, and with different sense of sovereign governments) was always called the same – Tanganyik. Maybe therefore, conflicts typical for the region did not reach such catastrophic scales in the republic, as in neighboring states. But still the country failed to completely avoid the country. From the embankment of the National Capital of Bujumbura is visible in the opposite shore, troubled Zaire (now renamed the Democratic Republic of the Congo). North from Burundi – Rwanda, who was not renamed from the XIX century, but a long-term inter-trimmed massacre, which has already entered the story as one of the most gloomy episodes of our century. Every time, in neighboring countries, another slaughter happens, the crowds of refugees from there are flooded by Burundi, which (together with purely internal conflicts, which are also enough) does not contribute to the prosperity of the Republic.

The name of the country’s national currency has been preserved in immutability since the times of Belgian colonial domination – Frank. It is even denoted almost the same as the currency of the former metropolis – BFR. On this, however, the similarity between the two monetary units-"Name-name" erect.

Burundian franc does not apply to freely convertible currencies. He also does not boast the stability of his Belgian older brother. To hyperinflation, the case in Burundi, fortunately, does not reach, but simply there is inflation – 12-15% per year. Now, at the official rate of 1 American dollar costs 340,885 Burundian franc. Although the course of the national currency in this country is not determined by administrative, but in general, both market methods (banks are focused primarily on fluctuations in the US dollar and French franc), in the past, the government has declared sharp devaluation several times, and such events are not excluded in the future.

Formally, the Burundian Franc is divided into 100 centimes, but, looking at the current exchange rate, it is not difficult to figure out that the exchange coin has long disappeared from the real circulation.

Practice to demand from foreigners a hard currency fees in Burundi is not very common. Dollars relies to pay for tickets to international flights to Lake Ferry, which goes to Tanzania. To buy everything else, the SLE must first change to the Burundian francs.

For such a small country, like Burundi (about 6 million people of the population, only two cities: Bujumbura and Gitega) there are unexpectedly many commercial banks. Their branches are not only in both cities, but also in settlements that we would call "towns of urban" Type. Such in the state – about a dozen.

Burundian banks are open from Monday to Friday. Working day of them are short: from 8.00 to 11.thirty.

Cash exchange occurs there in the course close to the official, without commission. With road checks the case is different. For the cashing, their some banks charge very high commissions – up to 7%. The most profitable for the holders of checks. Institution – Banque de la Republique du Burundi. He takes a modest commission (2%), and small amounts in checks can change even cash dollars. In Bujumbura, his headquartered is located on Avenue de Revolution, between Rue Gouvernment and Rue Eucalypt. At Avenue de Lneseignement there are offices of two other banks: Banque du Credit de Bujumbura and Banque Commerciale du Burundi.

After closing banks and on weekends, checks can be credited in one of the expensive metropolitan hotels, for example, in Novotel on Chaussee du Peuple Burundi ("Highway of the Burundian Nor").

In Bujumbura relatively openly acts "black" currency market. His workers carry Watch at the door of post offices in the city center. Their course is somewhat higher than the official. It also depends on the amount you want to change (for large banknotes Deltsy pay more). But seriously earn on "Parallel exchange" impossible. Besides, "private owners" Take only cash SLE and exclusively US dollars. With all other currencies, head to the bank.

In addition to local frankov "Black Delta" Sell (but do not buy) Tanzanian shillings. Western tourists, traveling to Tanzania by terrestrial transport, often resort to their services, because there are no exchange points directly on the border between the two countries.
