Large Pacific trash

Scientists have long known that a new mainland has formed in the Pacific Ocean. Its area is approximate, the borders too, and it is impossible to walk along this territory, since the "land" is plastic. This is a large Pacific garbage spot, or Eastern garbage continent. There is a garbage spot along the coordinates: 135-155 ° West longitude and 35-42 ° Northern latitude, that is, about between California and the Hawaiian Islands, and it is perfectly seen in the pictures from the space. The area of the garbage island – more than 1.6 million km². Yes, at the Pacific Square in 165.2 million km² it seems that it is a drop in the sea. Now imagine that the sizes of the Pacific garbage stain are equal to the square of France, Germany, Poland and another three-troika countries are smaller.

Here, at this point of the Pacific Ocean, approximately 80,000 tons of plastic gathered. Such numbers are given in the Pacific Report published in Scientific Reports Scientific Journal in 2018.

Of course, the dimensions are very exemplary. Eastern trash can, more known as a large Pacific garbage stain – this is a cluster of waste floating in one place, including in depth. Experts of the National Department of Oceanic and Atmospheric Studies predicted its existence in 1988. At the same time, they relied on the studies of individual sections of the Pacific and Pacific Snapshots from Cosmos. But by the first time the garls of the American Charles Moore first saw in 1997. At first, the public did not perceive his words about the giant landfill in the Pacific Ocean seriously. But once a storm threw a ton of plastic products to the beaches of the Hawaiian islands, and the big Pacific garbage stain spoke.

Unfortunately, from the moment of detection, the number of garbage stains has only increased. Some garbage emitted from ships, some kind – from the shore, some kind – in the ocean during storms, flooding. And waves of the North-Pacific flow system carry it further. Senior Researcher of the Laboratory of Ecology of Coastal Binal Communities, Candidate of Biological Sciences Philip Sapozhnikov In his posts about the Pacific Ocean explains: the peculiarity of these currents is that they form a kind of whist, within which almost always calm. Therefore, waste and does not break through the ocean: garbage stains gradually merge into one large spot.

Of course, the presence of garbage spots in the Pacific affects the inhabitants of the depths. Products from different materials float in waters, but the main harm brings plastic. In contrast to waste that is subject to biodegradation, it only disintegrates under the action of light on small particles. And fish often confuse them with plankton. As a result, they receive poisoning of varying degrees, and plastic comes on the food chain further, including comes to a person. No less harm is made by fishing nets, in which turtles are confused and dying, dolphins. Many marine animals take cellophane packages and plastic for jellyfish and eat them. Then dozens of plastic kilograms are found in the stomachs of the animals emitted. Scientists believe that Pacific garbage causes damage by more than 200 types of water inhabitants.

Large Pacific trash

Ecologists and oceanographers began to explore a large Pacific trash-stain in the late 2000s. Organizations were created by the problems of pollution of the World Ocean. And in 2017, environmentalists launched a campaign calling on the UN to recognize the Eastern garbage continent of the state. Even the name suggested – The Trash Isles ("Dubbown Islands"). The purpose of the action was to attract the attention of the public to the problem, and it was possible. Moreover, the former vice-president of the United States Albert Mountains declared himself the first citizen of the new "state". Read about other unusual states in our material "Amazing places for life". Also "My Planet" talked with a resident of another garbage island – Joycsi in the Bay of Island Isla-Mucheres, Mexico. What – read in our material. Briton Richarit Soya did not just build a house on the garbage island, but even grows palm trees on it, and mangrove trees help plastic bottles together.

Dorcerer Boyan Slat tried to solve the problem of garbage stains, in 2013 founding the non-commercial fund The Ocean Cleanup. According to the idea of the inventor, to clear from the debris of the Pacific Ocean, a special device is capable of a floating barrier 600 m long. The design captures the smallest pieces, and the auxiliary vessel from time to time transports waste to land. At the end of 2018, the first version was tested, after which the barrier was finalized and in 2019 were sent again to the Pacific Ocean. Four months later, Boyan Slat declared the success of the tests and promised that in the near future will go to the mass work. He is confident that the fleet of 60 such devices can remove half of the large Pacific garbage stain in five years. And by 2040 the project will allow to assemble about 90% of plastic.

Other attempts to clean the Pacific Ocean are being taken. In the same year 2019, the expedition of the KAISEI project was held, the author of which are specialists of the non-governmental organization Ocean Voyages Institute. For 25 days, they managed to catch 40 tons of garbage, including 5 tons of fishing nets.
