Lithuanian part of the Curonian Spit: Klaipeda and Nida resorts

A week later, July 15, 2010, the port of Klaipeda arrives in the port of Klaipeda, packed by the German aristocracy. On board, no little, a large symphony orchestra – more than one and a half hundred musicians, all of their skarb (musical instruments) and about two thousand accompanying. They will have to cross the border with Russia to play at the concert of the memory of the great German composer Karl Otto Nikolai, who was born in Konesberg smoothly two hundred years ago.

All operation: Arrival in Port Klaipeda, departure by buses (50 buses!), the passage of the border and departure in the same evening from Kaliningrad back is unlikely to take place without a bitch and zadorinka. Is it possible to suck the crowd of European Union’s citizens to the Kaliningrad region in a short time, and than to entertain those who did not succeed across the border during the specified time? Since I have to accompany the musicians, I went in advance – to familiarize yourself with the places of future musical and logistics adventure.

Klaipeda

The great Russian historian and traveler Nikolai Mikhailovich Karamzin wrote about Klaipeda, called memel then: "The city is small; There are stone buildings, but few decent. Citadel is very strong; However, our Russians knew how to take it in 57".

The citadel before my arrival did not reach, now it is gradually digging, and it seems to be even want to restore. In one of the preserved fortress shafts made a museum. Stone buildings, apparently, it became more – in a pair of modern skyscrapers, built in the form of letters to and d, a state-of-the-art hotel. To some extent, Klaipedachas managed to preserve the old center built up German "Fakhverkom". In general, the town turned on Scandinavian cozy, very clean and rich in eatery.

  • From Klaipeda to the Russian border – 50 km
  • Ship Flyuggers of the Curonian Bay
  • Dominics of the Curonian Spit

In the counter of Memer, about which Karamzin responded with respect, everything is still fine. Small business masters the quarters of the old city, turning some streets into a closed space with cozy restaurants for every taste. Prices on average twice below Moscow. Fed and eat tasty, except that the wine list is a rare case, but the varieties of excellent beer are always at least five. From local dishes, visits are affixed with chapelins – potato sizes with a handball ball.

There is no shortage in Klaipeda and in the entertainment of a very aesthetic. In the museum of hours, there is an interesting collection of various hourly mechanisms, and above right above its courtyard, in the Tower of the Old Mail, a carillon is played every day. On this tool, combining 48 bells, Carillonist Stanislovas Zhilevichyus performs breathtaking melodies, from classic to modern.

Another years for four hundred to Karamzin Klaipeda was already a strategically significant city-port, it remains and still. With its location, she covers the entrance to the Curonian bay, and, correspond to Neman. Tops in Nemanu to Klaipeda fused the forest to further sell it throughout Northern Europe. Germans, the longest owned by memel, always tried to strengthen it here. On the eve of the Second World War, the Battery of Coast Guns was built here, on the bastions of which you can wander until now.

Curonian Cos

North Cape Curonian Spit is right opposite Klaipeda port. Here you get a ferry, in ten minutes crossing the bay in his most narrow place. Here, in the bastion, rebuilt the same Germans, but for two hundred years earlier, the mass of intricate basins duck. Now it is, no doubt, one of the symbols of modern Lithuania. Here are the Dolphinarium and the Maritime Museum.

Reasonable Dolphins, Giant Syvuchi Athletes and Other Trained Sea Fauna pleases and surprises children. Aquariums with the entire palette of the underwater world, in the semit of the museum tent, are not joking the young men and girls. Everything shines from the inside, bouffags and splash. The halls of the museum representing the history of navigation, and the ethnographic house of the fisherman will be interested in adults, driven by the thirst for impressions.

In the scene in the direction of the Russian border 50 kilometers stretches the picturesque road. Even a superficial view of the car window clearly shows that the Lithuanians in a short independence time managed to arrange an absolutely postcard server Europe. Everything seemed to be cleaned with a vacuum. I want to get out of the bus and make sure the material is pictures behind the window glass. Without a lazy traveler, it makes sense to rent a bike (25 litas per day) – Spit infrastructure perfectly sharpened under the bicycle (and hiking) rest.

Curonian Spit was an important trading way – first between knightly orders, and after – for two centuries – Dear from St. Petersburg to Paris. The increased activity of merchants and warriors led to the fact that the forest in the vicinity was once pretty increased. The obstacle to the sands of the braid disappeared, and they became crawling dunes threatening the villages. So 14 villages and ate. So the forest over the past 80 years have noticed a new one, they protect him as an eye.

Ecology from the local government is generally a number one question. The nearing mayor (so, called all the villages on the Lithuanian part of the braid nominally combined into a single city), with whom I had a chance to meet, only tells about the environmental fees for transport (20 litas from each car), about the separate collection of garbage, about the breakdown in the bay Big Blanks.

Cormorants divorced so much that they eat and caught fish much more than fishermen do. But neither to destroy, nor anyone can not be moved – a big cormorant (he is the black focus) – not only a protected appearance, but also one of the symbols of local well-being.

Caring for ecology brings fruit. The embankment of the resort town of Nida more reminds the film pavilion with decorations for the film about the Vikings, rather than the inhabitable city. Swans, abundant on the coast of the Curonian Gaf, take bread from hand. Fishermen disappear from the pier of fresh catch, very diverse, brags with cores with funds and Cambalo. Over the dunes, placing huge wings, the hosting eagle harness.

Being here, it is difficult to suspect the presence of the Russian border in four kilometers. The city as a refuge of artists of all masters, so it remains. The settlement from the fairy tale about the ancient pagan peoples – even at the local cemetery (even more or rather – the chapter) of the tombstone, for the most part – not crosses, but by Abrisami of pagan totems.

Vanilla Fiery Evening Nida Robs me into a romantic adventure mood. The girl from the tourist information bureau is caused to show us the place of power – from those where the direct experience of the magic energy of the Curonian Spit is coming.

  • Swans on the embankment of Nida treat with hands
  • Sunset over Baltic
  • Lighthouse in Nide
  • Sundial

We turn out to be on top of the dune, in the midst of a paved stone platform with a huge granite stele of sunshine. From here is visible and sunset and sunrise – the sun rises from the bay water and falls in the Water Baltic. Here, one of the days of the year the sacrament took place – the sunbeam, passing through "Needle Ushko" In Obelisk, got into the triangular hole of the magic stone and, piercing him, noted the time of the equinox. But the forces of nature were pretended for residents of the Curonian Spit (it seems, for her partition between the countries) and once a hurricane broke the granite stele on three multi-torque parts.

White sand beaches of Nida, in which the fact and the case find amber, surprisingly soft and pleasant. The fame of the Vilnius Autonomous Republic of Artists "Jupis" does not give rest to the towns of Lithuania. Everyone would grow to European countries to grow, rebuilding, with the calculation of an indispensable celebration of art, music and peace.

  • Before building a self-building New building
  • Mount Witch
  • Without souvenirs from amber from the Curonian Spit you will not leave

The recipe for inspiration for any artist here is honed by decades. Rent an apartment, and better workshop, overlooking the sea, take a bike and go to dunes dunes of love or dune death – who likes more. Get to Mount Witch. Many artists ponovatted here wooden statues, depicting in them the heroes of folk legends and fairy tales. From the forest counters, it is also a matter of witch statues, devils, dragons and epic heronts. In the afternoon, this is a place for children’s walks, in the evening – a mystical chill appears with the onset of fog.

There are several small and neat museums in NIDE, it is worth mentioning the Museum of Miniatures and the Amber Museum. In the modern local lore museum, among other things, the photographs have been demonstrated by national fishery of the hungry times – catching raven.

And yet: how’s the border?

The mayor of the neurgeni Vigantas Hydrajtis reassured me about the border – there is never a queue here.

In the telephone book of the mayor, there was also a telephone of the head of the Russian border appendix of Talgata Isataevich Kyrgyzbayev. I take responsibility to find out the answer to an extremely relevant question: how easy it will be able to overcome the border two thousands of heavy musicians. Internationale works properly – workshops from all sides have already been held. Concert in Kaliningrad simply can not not take place.

Well, after the concert, the comfort and exofment will take their own – a quiet weekend on a rickety spit is able to remove stress after any experience. It’s nice that in the coming weeks, meteorologists are planned nor clouds in the sky and about 30 degrees Celsius. Obviously, the gentlemen of musicians have a rich musical and romantic rest.
