Live stories of St. Petersburg
Before you, a story about the old Petersburg, his homes and residents who survived the revolution, civil war, sealing, blockade. How it was all.
Schraiberov House, ul. Tchaikovsky, 63
From the moment of construction and before his death in 1898, the famous Mobile Artist Nikolay Alexandrovich Yaroshenko with his family.
They occupied a "small, very cozy apartment," and "the only large room was occupied by the workshop". The legendary became arranged in their apartment "Saturdays", the memories of which were preserved in many essays and correspondence of contemporaries. "Evening spent in Yaroshenko among disputes, noise and singing. It’s very lively evenings and a nice tone, "the artist Vasily Polenov wrote his wife. And in another letter: "Terribly I liked yesterday evening Yaroshenko: live cheerfully, fun and together intelligently".
The artist Mikhail Nesterov recalled: "In the nearest "Saturday" I went to Sergievskaya, where Yaroshenko lived. They gathered people of different provisions, interesting and businesslike. Here, it was often possible to meet famous people of science, art, literature.
These meetings did not know what kind of boredom, screw, drink – these inevitable satellites of the spiritual cloak of society. "
Postcard "S.-Petersburg. Chinese Embassy [Sergievskaya Street, 63] ". Russia, S.-Petersburg, 1890-1904. GMZ "Peterhof" (Keeper of the Foundation "Postcards" – N.A. Yaroshuk)
On the same staircase, where Yaroshenko’s apartment was, at the end of the XIX – early XX century, the Chinese Embassy was placed. Anna Ivanovna Mendeleeva – Spouse Dmitry Ivanovich Mendeleev (who was also a frequent guest in Yaroshenko) – recalled: "Frosty winter evening. Food on sledding to Yaroshenko in Sergiev. Staying the cab driver at the house where the Chinese Embassy was placed. Yaroshenko lived on the same staircase – upstairs, in the fourth floor. There is always a special sharp smell on the stairs. I ask somehow a doorman: "Than you always smell?" – "The Chinese crocodile fry", – he answers gloomily. It turned out, it is a bean oil, the necessary personality of Chinese cuisine. I ride on the very top. Foundations are found in the courts, rudely blameed, implaced, with intricate hairstyles, decorated with artificial paper flowers, like those who are decorated with cakes ".
Why still not arrested me? All decent people are already there!
But the memories of love Petrovna Myasnikova, granddaughters of the famous physics Nikolai Nikolayevich Davidenkova, who settled in this house in 1921.
". Pre-war repression miracle bypassed our family. Dad and grandfather were waiting for them to be arrested: they had coolers with things, toothbrushes and T.NS. Grandfather all ran into fiztech and repeated: "Why still not arrested me? All decent people are already there!"
One of the early children’s memories – a call to the apartment at three o’clock in the morning. All then strained, because the black funnels just came at night. The grandfather went to open, and soon his head lasted with her parents: "Nothing terrible, we just burn!"
Memories about pre-war life I have very little, and I, oddly enough, I remember without horror. Due to the least years in the head there were ideas that the world is when it is possible to eat joinery glue as much as you want. We did not remember what the other life happens, without bomb explosions, without sirens, without cold and hunger, without "Lighters". And in such a lifetime, we managed to find joy: "Hooray! Sixty-first shell exploded! Bat fragments collect!" And we, very kids, breaking our heads enter the courtyard of the neighboring house number 61 to grab the torn, still a hot piece of iron. Who grab the biggest and the hottest, he won.
In my collection there were 389 anti-aircraft fragments. But there was among them and something ticking, like a watchmaking mine room: it was very scarecrow my mother, and once at night she stoleed the box with my "Toys" And drowned him in the Neva. For me it was grief.
Nothing terrible, we just burn!
In May 1941, our prudent grandmother bought 20 cubic meters of firewood, it saved us. In winter, the whole staircase came to us for boiling water: there was nothing, but was always boiling water ".
Profitable House Hemilian, 4th line of Vasilyevsky Islands, 19
In 1914, an employee of the Petrograd office of the State Bank of the State Bank, Vladimir Henrikhovich and his family settled in the house. His descendants still live in the house, in the part of the former homeowner apartment. Tatyana Dmitrievna Berseneva – Grandmother Vladimir Henrykhovich – lives in the house from birth, since 1969.
"… Vladimir Henrykhovich also had a Kodak camera before the revolution, and we had several amateur photos of those years. I call one of them "Husband in service": Prabaato with girlfriends smoke, sitting on a large leather sofa in the office of Vladimir Henrykhovich. It is about 1915, as smoking Tamara Ivanovna became with the beginning of the First World War ".
In the family archive of Tatiana stored several pre-revolutionary copies of the contract of employment Vladimir Henrikhovich Hintz Apartments No. 4. The word "bath" in the contract is incurred in no coincidence. The bathroom here really wasn’t at that time, and the family was going to the public showers at the corner of the large. and the 5th line.

According to the contract, the price for accommodation in 1915 was 840 rubles per year; Extraked Water Socks and service of janitors: five rubles per month. It is noteworthy that by August 1917, the price of an apartment rose by 7%, while the services of janitors went up by as much as 60%, up to eight rubles per month. This is not surprising: Petrograd between the February and October revolutions was not the safest place, and the wipers who performed the security functions were earned in those months more than ordinary. The last "hired money" received the manager of the house for December 1917: there are no later marks on the contract, although he acted until August 1918.
Are busy with the rules of residence described in the contract. Among other things, the linen in the room or the kitchen is not allowed to wash, it doesn’t throw anything from the windows and not pour, the staircase, the courtyard and the attic nothing to be done, do not keep the dog, the dog is permitted, but so that it is removed on the black stairs under the supervision Servants and so because of her did not occur against other residents ". Dog really kept.
"In the family lived the legendary Irish Setter named Osman, – tells Tatyana. – For the hunt, he was not suitable, he once wounded the shot, and he was afraid of sounds of shots. Osman was extremely smart and survived the revolution. Noteworthy episode: In 1918 it was hungry, and Vladimir Henrikhovich regularly released the walking Osman one on the black stairs. Once he almost immediately returned with a big lamb leg in the teeth. Where he pulled it is unknown, but the family was happy and for some time fed, and Osman got the most tight piece.
On the third floor, a horse was brought to the apartment, then I could not pull it for a long time, on the roof some srath, a pig scolded all night, which was closed there
After the October Revolution, the paradinary were skipped, all went on a black staircase, the gate were always closed. In 1918, her grandmother with great-grandmother went to the Novgorod region for security reasons, and Vladimir Henrikhovich lived in St. Petersburg and went to the service. In the letters, he told that in the black market you can find almost everything, but the price of firewood and products were fantastic ".
The family witnessed the flood of 1924.
"Since 1924, there was a bakery in the basement, and I know it from the grandmother’s stories: September 23, 1924, my eleven-year-old grandmother returned from school, they were at home with mom, as suddenly saw the water arriving in the window: our house is approximately In the middle between the two sleeves of the Neva, and the streams of water converged just opposite the house. Water rose very quickly. Soon, Vladimir Henrikhovich came, already on the wet belt, and after some time, looked from the basement of our house, looked loaf and rats – this was the view from the windows of the 4th line.

I had to start spending the night some kind of couple, failed to get to your home.
And my godfather, who lived then on Havanskaya Street, the memories were abruptly. He was 16 years old, and all this he perceived as an adventure: on the third floor, the horse brought into the apartment, then they couldn’t pull it for a long time, there was some night on the roof, a pig was scared all night, which was looked there, and from the city that was Closer to the bay, brought a whole bunch of cabbage: it was covered with her all the tip of a large avenue. By the way, my biggest children’s fear is a flood, I was impressed by these stories. And ceased to be afraid of them when I realized that my head was towers above the flood of 1824 at the corner of the Great PR. and the 1st line where we often walked.
After the revolution, seals began: the Poor Committee gave three months to find those with whom the family wants to live. Family of Vladimir Henrykhovich gathered with his brother Alexey Henrykhovich’s family. During NEP, relatives went to Moscow, and they again lived alone. It seemed to be a thaw, but by the end of the 1920s they were again sealing. Of the four rooms they only have two. Great-grandmother was very worried due to seals. One of the rooms was taken by an active Komsomolic in the Red Slash. Her great-grandmother had a class confrontation.
